PS5 Emulator: What Actually Works in 2026, and the Fake Downloads to Avoid

31 October 2026 12 min read Mark Baxman

Quick answer: Yes, real PS5 emulators now exist, but they are experimental. On 31 October 2026 the two active open-source projects are KytyPS5 and SharpEmu, plus AnyPS5, a tool that converts PS5 game code to run natively on a PC. They can run a growing list of games, some well and many with glitches or crashes, and they only work with game files copied from a PS5 you own. Any site offering a finished “PS5 emulator” download with games included, a survey or a “PS5 BIOS” is a scam.

What this page adds: a dated status check of each real project, with the games reputable outlets have actually seen running; the names of the known fakes and the October 2026 malware copies of KytyPS5 and AnyPS5; a checklist for spotting a fake before you run it; and the legal ways to play PS5 games on a PC, handheld or phone today. We checked the projects’ official GitHub pages on 31 October 2026. This field changes weekly, so check the dates.

Is there a real PS5 emulator in 2026?

Yes. Earlier attempts such as the original Kyty emulator stalled, and all three current projects are new: SharpEmu’s GitHub page was created in March 2026, KytyPS5’s in June and AnyPS5’s in August. They can already boot real games, and the race has sped up ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI, which Rockstar has dated for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, which is exactly why “GTA 6 PS5 emulator” is now a scam bait.

All three need a reasonably modern PC: KytyPS5 asks for a 64-bit x86 processor and a graphics card that supports Vulkan 1.3, and SharpEmu needs a Vulkan graphics card with current drivers. None of them offers an Android or iPhone version.

What PS5 games can these emulators actually run?

Fewer than the YouTube thumbnails suggest. These are the results reported by named outlets, with dates:

  • KytyPS5, July 2026: Tom’s Hardware reported XIII (the 2020 remake) “playable” at up to 30 FPS with obvious texture glitches, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants at 22–24 FPS after crashing on first launch.
  • SharpEmu, September 2026: the developers tested 55 games; 12 reached gameplay, and six ran at a playable 60 FPS: Dreaming Sarah, Void Terrarium, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, Tetris Forever, Hoa and Tomb Raider IV–VI Remastered, according to Tom’s Hardware. Those six had not been tested from start to finish.
  • KytyPS5, September 2026: the PS5 version of GTA V ran at roughly 40–60 FPS on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Radeon RX 7900 XT PC, then crashed after the opening mission (same Tom’s Hardware report).
  • KytyPS5, October 2026: PC Gamer reported Demon’s Souls running at up to 120 FPS at 1080p on an RTX 5070 and Ryzen 7 9800X3D PC, using DLSS frame generation, in footage from YouTuber Geralt Benchmarks, with “noticeable hitching”.

KytyPS5’s own page shows screenshots of games including Astro Bot, Cyberpunk 2077, Saros and Demon’s Souls, and warns that “compatibility, stability, and performance can vary between versions”. A screenshot means a game reached that screen on someone’s PC, not that it is playable from start to finish. Expect crashes, missing graphics and builds that fix one game and break another.

Why is PS5 emulation possible so soon?

Because the PS5 is closer to a PC than older consoles were. Its processor uses AMD’s Zen 2 design, the same x86-64 type as a desktop PC, so an emulator can run most game code directly instead of translating every instruction, as Tom’s Hardware explains in its SharpEmu report. The graphics chip is based on AMD’s RDNA 2 design, and the hard work is converting the PS5’s graphics commands and shaders to Vulkan and recreating Sony’s system libraries.

That is also why AnyPS5 takes a different route. Its developers describe it as a relinker that converts a PS5 executable into the target system’s native format, with replacement system libraries, and “no emulation or separate runtime process”.

What do you need to use a PS5 emulator legally?

  • A PS5 and the games. Every project expects you to supply the game’s files yourself. KytyPS5 says to “use only game files that you have obtained legally”, and SharpEmu’s developers say every game they test is dumped from consoles they own.
  • The ability to copy those files. A normal PS5 does not let you copy a game off in a usable form; that is only possible on consoles running older system software with known security holes. We don’t cover how, and the law on bypassing copy protection varies by country (in the UK and US it is generally not allowed, even for games you own).
  • No BIOS, firmware or keys. KytyPS5 says it “does not distribute games or copyrighted system software” and that external low-level modules are “neither required nor planned”. AnyPS5 says it does not “include, distribute, or require copyrighted software, firmware, cryptographic keys”. So any site offering a “PS5 BIOS” for an emulator is selling you something that real projects don’t use.

How do you spot a fake PS5 emulator?

Fake PlayStation emulators are an old scam. In 2019 PC Gamer documented PCSX4, a fake “PS4 emulator” with a convincing website, YouTube videos and a GitHub page, which made visitors complete surveys before a download that never delivered. Its PS5 equivalent, PCSX5, has a website calling itself a “beta PS5 Emulator”; on 18 October 2026 Gridinsoft’s scanner gave it a trust score of 10 out of 100, with warnings from four security providers including BitDefender and G-Data. We are not linking to either.

The newer danger is fake copies of the real projects. On 29 October 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported NordVPN research on GitHub repositories impersonating KytyPS5 and AnyPS5. They offered a ZIP file whose Windows program installs a hidden loader. It quits if the PC looks like a security researcher’s test machine, adds exclusions to Microsoft Defender, runs what NordVPN believes is a password-stealing program, then deletes its files about two minutes later. “Emulation fans are a perfect target,” said NordVPN’s chief technology officer, Marijus Briedis, in comments quoted by TechPowerUp. “They are used to downloading experimental software from GitHub and running unsigned files.”

Before you run anything, check:

  1. The address. The real projects are at github.com/KytyPS5/KytyPS5, github.com/sharpemu/sharpemu and github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5. A copy under a different account name is not the project, however many stars it has.
  2. Where the download comes from. Real releases are on the project’s own GitHub Releases page. A link to a file-sharing site, a “mirror” or a link in a YouTube description is a warning sign.
  3. The creation date. A repository made last week claiming a finished emulator is fake.
  4. What it promises. Surveys, “human verification”, payment, a “PS5 BIOS”, games included, Android APKs or “runs every game” are all signs of a scam.
  5. What it asks your PC to do. A real emulator never asks you to turn off your antivirus or add an exclusion.

If you have already run a fake, disconnect the PC from the internet, run a full antivirus scan, and change your passwords from a different device, starting with email, banking and gaming accounts, as Tom’s Hardware’s report advises.

For most people, Remote Play is the answer: it is free, streams the games you already own, and needs only your PS5 and a decent home network. The PlayStation Portal does the same on a dedicated 8-inch handheld; check the price of the PlayStation Portal on Amazon. In the UK, PlayStation Plus Premium (needed for Portal cloud streaming) cost £14.99 a month or £119.99 a year on 31 October 2026.

FAQ

Is there a working PS5 emulator?

Partly. KytyPS5 and SharpEmu can run some commercial PS5 games on a PC, and AnyPS5 can convert some to run natively, but all three are experimental on 31 October 2026. A few games play well; many crash or have graphics problems.

Is PCSX5 a real PS5 emulator?

No. PCSX5 is not a real emulator project. On 18 October 2026 Gridinsoft gave its website a trust score of 10 out of 100, with warnings from four security providers. It copies the name of PCSX2, the real PS2 emulator, as the fake PCSX4 did before it.

Can I play GTA 6 on a PS5 emulator?

Not on release. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and PS5 emulators are far from running new games reliably. Any download claiming to run GTA 6 on PC is a scam.

Is there a PS5 emulator for Android?

No. None of the real projects (KytyPS5, SharpEmu or AnyPS5) has an Android or iPhone version, and KytyPS5 needs a 64-bit x86 PC processor. Any “PS5 emulator APK” is fake.

Do PS5 emulators need a BIOS?

No. KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 both say they do not need or include PlayStation firmware, and SharpEmu says it contains no copyrighted system firmware. A site offering a “PS5 BIOS” download is not connected to any real project.

Are PS5 emulators legal?

Writing and using an emulator is generally legal. Using one with games you didn’t buy is not, and copying your own PS5 games involves bypassing copy protection, which is restricted in the UK, the US and many other countries.
