Which Replacement Stylus Fits Your Record Player?

27 October 2026 9 min read Mark Baxman

Quick answer: The replacement stylus is set by the cartridge, not the turntable brand, so start with the model number on the label under your player. For most budget Audio-Technica decks (AT-LP60X, AT-LP60XBT, AT-LP60XUSB, Sound Burger) it is the ATN3600LC (conical) or the ATN3600LE (elliptical upgrade). Most Crosley Cruisers and Voyagers take the NP-6. Most Victrola Journey, Parker and Quincy suitcase players take the ITNP-S1. Sony’s PS-LX310BT, PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT share one Sony-only stylus. The tables below match more models, and the rest of the guide covers how to check yours and when a needle is worn out.

This is a lookup guide put together from the manufacturers’ own compatibility charts: Crosley’s needle replacement page, Victrola’s needle chart and Audio-Technica’s stylus pages. We have not fitted every stylus to every deck, so where a maker’s chart and a seller’s listing disagree, trust the maker.

How do I find which stylus my record player needs?

Three checks, in order:

  1. Read the label under the player. Crosley and Victrola both use the model number (for example CR8005D or VSC-550BT) to match the needle, and it is printed on the label on the base. Victrola’s chart also asks for the start of the serial number on some models.
  2. Look at the cartridge. On many Audio-Technica decks the cartridge body carries its own name, such as AT3600L. The stylus for an AT3600L-type cartridge is the ATN3600L family.
  3. Check the manual or the maker’s chart. If the model is not listed, contact the maker before you buy. Look-alike needles sold as “fits Crosley, Victrola and ION” are not always the same shape, and a stylus that is the wrong length or tracking force can skip or wear records.

Audio-Technica: ATN3600LC or ATN3600LE?

Audio-Technica’s fixed-cartridge decks use a snap-on stylus for the AT3600L-type cartridge. According to Audio-Technica, the ATN3600LC fits these models:

TurntableReplacement stylusTip shapeRated life (Audio-Technica)

Audio-Technica’s UK support advice is that the fixed-cartridge LP60X and Sound Burger decks only work with the ATN3600LC or the ATN3600LE. Other Audio-Technica styli would make the tracking force too high on these arms. Audio-Technica also says it does not recommend third-party styli it has not tested.

Which to choose: the LC is the like-for-like replacement. The LE has an elliptical tip, which Audio-Technica sells as an upgrade for more detail. Either fits the same cartridge.

Crosley: NP-6, NP-5, NP-15 or NP-16?

Crosley publishes a full model-to-needle list. The most common matches from Crosley’s chart:

Crosley needleFits (examples from Crosley’s list)
NP-6Cruiser CR8005A, B, C, D, DP, E and U; Voyager CR8017; CR6017; CR6019; CR7016; Mini Cruiser CR8050A; Brio CR6043A; Riff CR7502A

NP-10CR6048A, CR7023A, CR7503A, T100A
NP-14C100BT

Crosley lists the NP-1 and NS-1 as discontinued. The NP-6 that Crosley sells has a sapphire tip and plays 33, 45 and 78 rpm records.

Victrola: ITNP-S1 and the serial-number catch

Victrola’s needle chart matches the ITNP-S1 to many of its suitcase players, including the Journey VSC-550BT, Journey+ VSC-400SB, Journey II VSC-600SB, VSC-700SB, Parker VSC-580BT, Quincy VTA-200B, VTA-65, VTA-67, VTA-75 Liberty and VTA-204B.

The catch is the serial number. Victrola says the ITNP-S1 fits units whose serial starts with Y, S, B, GK or AA, and it does not fit “SAM” serials or the model with the white canvas sticker. Check before you order. Other Victrola models use different needles: the Eastwood VTA-72, 73, 74 and 78 and the Revolution GO VSC-750SB take the Audio-Technica ATN3600L type, and others take the ITNP-LC1, VND-08 or ITNP-Y2.

For decks with a removable headshell and a standard cartridge, the choice is wider: you can replace just the stylus, or change the whole cartridge. Our turntable cartridge guide covers that route.

How long does a record player needle last?

It depends on the tip material and how hard the arm presses down.

TipTypical rated lifeSource
Sapphire (many suitcase players)About 50 to 100 hoursanalogis
Diamond, conical (ATN3600LC)About 300 to 500 hoursAudio-Technica
Diamond, general rangeAbout 300 to 1,000 hoursAudio-Technica guidance

At two hours of listening a week, 50 hours is about six months and 300 hours is nearly three years. Heavier tracking force wears both the stylus and your records faster, which is why suitcase players with heavy arms get through needles quickly. If you own a deck with an adjustable counterweight, our guide to measuring stylus pressure shows how to check it.

Signs your stylus is worn

  • Sound becomes dull or muffled, especially on the inner tracks.
  • Harsh, spitty “s” sounds (sibilance) and distortion on loud passages.
  • New skipping on records that played cleanly before.
  • Visible damage: a bent cantilever, or a tip clogged with fluff that will not clean off.

If you have bought a second-hand turntable, budget for a new stylus straight away, because you cannot know how many hours the old one has done. Our article on tracking force and stylus wear explains why a worn tip can damage records.

How to fit a snap-on stylus

  1. Lift the arm and lock it in its rest, and switch the player off.
  2. Hold the cartridge body with one hand and pull the stylus housing forward and down, away from the cartridge.
  3. Slide the new stylus in at the same angle until it clicks into place.
  4. Check the tip is centred and nothing is bent, then play a record you do not mind risking first.

Never touch the tip, and keep the protective guard on until the stylus is fitted.

FAQ

What needle does an Audio-Technica AT-LP60X use?

The ATN3600LC conical stylus, or the ATN3600LE elliptical upgrade. Audio-Technica says the LP60X only works with those two styli.

What needle does a Crosley Cruiser use?

The Crosley Cruiser CR8005 range (A, B, C, D, DP, E and U) takes the Crosley NP-6, according to Crosley’s needle chart.

Do Victrola needles fit Crosley players?

Some look alike, but they are not interchangeable across every model. Match the needle to your model number on each maker’s chart. The Victrola ITNP-S1 also depends on your serial number.

How often should I replace a record player needle?

Sapphire tips last roughly 50 to 100 hours; Audio-Technica rates its ATN3600LC diamond at about 300 to 500 hours. Replace sooner if the sound turns dull or harsh, or records start to skip.

Can I put a better stylus on a cheap record player?

Only the ones the maker lists. On Audio-Technica’s LP60X and Sound Burger that means the ATN3600LE elliptical upgrade; other styli could raise the tracking force.
